The Acquisitions System and Policies

Miami University Libraries

Library resources are acquired through a multi-faceted system consisting of an approval plan, direct orders, subscriptions to periodicals and series, gifts, and purchases from endowed funds. Through an approval plan with Yankee Book Peddler we should receive most new monographs published by United States university and academic presses as well as new works by major contemporary writers. Direct orders supplement the approval plan through selective purchasing of British and European monographs and new poetry, fiction, and drama. Selective subscriptions to yearbooks and monographic series insure the timely receipt of new volumes; the periodicals subscription list aims to bring in the most important criticism, scholarship, and new writing from scholarly journals and literary reviews. Ongoing development and management of the collection is the responsibility of the Humanities Librarian, who in turn works closely with Department faculty in English, French and Italian, German and East Asian, and Theatre.
Please contact Bill Wortman with suggestions for new purchases, for concerns about the Library's collection and services, and to discuss special needs connected with courses and research.
