Protections are granted to inventors under Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution that permit the inventor to exclude others from making, using or selling the invention for a restricted period of time. These protections are called patents. Patent records give a picture of the concerns and economic operations at a particular place and at a particular point in time.

The earliest patent granted in Ohio Territory was 1793, although the U.S. awarded the first patent in 1790. This index covers the years 1793-1840 and lists only Ohio inventors. It is based on the publications of the U.S. Patent Office.

If you would like to see full text of these patents, search by the Patent Number at The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office web page. Items beginning with U are numbers which I created to identify part of the unnumbered patent series before 1837. X indicates pre-1837 patents that are in the USPTO database. Some pre-1837 patents are available on microfilm from any Patent Depository Library.

The data on this page is arranged by Inventor(s), by person or company to whom the patent was assigned, by subject category and by County. Each patent has a representative drawing attached, if available. Searching is also available by Inventor's Last Name, Keyword in title, and Place. If there is no information a blank screen will appear.

The column to the left shows some analysis of the data in these files.
