Workshops with Computer Support

Where: Western Maryland College
Developed by: Rob Withers (former Systems/Technical Services Librarian)

Who: Library & computer support personnel
  • Directors of Information Services & Library
  • Library Webmaster
  • User Support Coordinator
  • Campus Webmaster
  • Others (When some librarians chose not to participate in web authoring workshops, technically savvy staff with prior teaching experience volunteered to learn web authoring and assist with the workshops).
  • How: Multi-day workshops.
  • 1 hour lecture/1 hour hands-on. Lectures on design principles and using the editor were led by the library web master because of his combination of teaching and technical skills. Attendees began developing pages during hands-on sessions assisted by a team of computing support personnel and librarians.
  • HTML Editors used. With a goal of creating a web presence for as many departments as possible, we decided to use.
  • Results
  • More than 10 faculty/department pages.
  • Issues
  • Support for HTML Editor software upgrades. How should new releases be distributed? What support should be available for users of the previous release
  • Who should be trained to maintain pages? Many departments entrused maintenance of web pages to departmental secretaries. Should their positions be upgraded? Can they be expected to provide updated content and design?
