A Note about News Sources

Even though news sources attempt to report the facts, never assume that they are unbiased and complete. News sources ALWAYS have a particular editorial view point. For instance look at the Times London coverage of events compared to a US and a Middle Eastern country's paper. Some just have a particular view of the world (liberl ,conservative, republican, democrat), some may be controlled by the state, by local politicians or by the owners. Some are influenced by the system of government and by social factors of the envirnoment in which they publish.

Kinds of News Sources

• News magazines -- domestic foreign
• Newspapers -- domestic, foreign, business, trade/association, in English or other Langs
• Transcripts -- radio programs (NPR), televsion news (msnbc, cnn, abc, etc.), ususally on a web site or on Lexis/Nexis/Academic Universe
• Real audio/ viedo -- radio programs (NPR), televsion news (msnbc, cnn, abc, etc.); but usually on a web site

What we own

In general we have paper copies of current issues (about 3 months) of major world and US newspapers. Some examples: New York Times, Times (London), Los Angeles Times, China Daily, LeMonde, Cincinnati Enquirer, Oxford Press. These are keept in the IMC on the third floor of King. We keep some of the newspapers (older issues) on microfilm.

Our news magazines are shelved in the periodicals section in King Library by title.

Using SHERLOCK

• Use SHERLOCK to search by title. Newspaper titles are tricky in that sometimes they do not contain the name of the city in which they are published. For instance, the New York Times is the correct title in the catalog. However the London Times is really the Times (London) -- and is really hard to find in SHERLOCK
• It's nearly impossible to look up newspapers and news magazines in SHERLOCK by location -- that is you can't look up Cincinnati, OH -- newspapers because the subject of the newspaper isn't cincinnati. Sometimes you can look up a news magazine by country ie. India Today is indexed under India -- periodicals. However, this often doesn't work as Time Magazine is assigned no subject at all.
