Radical Periodicals in the United States -- micro series that includes many labor periodicals. To look at titles, type Radical Periodicals in the United States in our catalog as a title.

Government Documents has Department of Labor publications and various related offices /activities. The department has materials back into the 19c. Consult with a Government Documents Librarian for the appropriate index.

Look for papers and published books, etc. of major figures in the labor movement, ie.look for Samuel Gompers as an author in the catalog.

Weedpatch Camp

Published in 1939, John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath drew
attention to the hardships faced by the "Okies": poor farmers who moved
from the Dust Bowl area to California in search of work. While writing the
book, John Steinbeck visited Bakersfield, California and based his book on
Arvin Federal Government Camp which he portrayed as "Weedpatch
Camp."

Covering 1940 and 1941, this collection documents the lives of Dust Bowl migrants living in Farm Security Administration (FSA) camps in California. It provides searchable access to 371 audio titles including songs, interviews and recordings of camp meetings, 23 graphic images, a sampling of the recording's dust jackets, and all the print material in the Migrant Worker Collection, including the full-text of over 100 songs.
