Directories provide address of archives and sometimes descriptions of their collections. In the case of the web links, an email link, as well as a web site link. The web sites may also have finding aids or guides to some of the more popular collections in the Archive.

 

References to Known Collections

Indexes
These indexes provide subject access to collections over a wide area. You would be able to look up a topic,obstetrics or women scientiests for instance or the name of an individual or orgnaization and find a collection and locate the archive or library in which it is located.

Catalogs to Libraries
These catalogs provide an index to a specific archive or library's collection. In your research you would have to have knowledge that a particular library or archive is appropriate for you to search in that collection.

 

Biographical Resources
Biographic Dictionaries often contain a reference to the location of the individual papers and early, seminal biographies.

Chronlogies and Lists of Facts
As background sources, its often useful to be able to place dates of events and ideas together.
