Course Objective: This course is intended for students wishing to become literate in the use of the Internet. At the end of this course you will be prepared to:

Assignments: Readings will be linked from the syllabus, and from the class text, McLaren, Bruce J. Understanding and Using The Internet. West Publishing, 1997.

Quizzes: 2 short answer quizzes.

In class assignments (Can be done in pairs; futher details handed out in class):

  1. Find a site with reliable information and one site with unreliable information about one of the following topics:
    AIDS
    politics
    Smoking and tobacco


  2. Compare web search engines with traditional electronic indexes. In class assignment.

Final Project: Group exercise: Web Search Tools Pair up with another person to work on this project. You will search for something/anything (but the topic should be approved) and evauluate it and present your findings to the class. Presentation should be about 4-5 minutes in length.

Evaluation:Final grades will be dependent on successful completion of all assignments, class participation, quizzes, and projects.

Class Participation:Due to the fast pace of the course, attendance is expected at all scheduled class sessions. Participation in class discussions is also required.
