HOW TO FIND MATERIALS IN THE

GOVERNMENT INFORMATION & LAW DEPARTMENT

The Government Information & Law Department has the following collections: United States government, Law, United Nations, European Union, and Ohio government.

LIBRARY CATALOG (MiamiLINK)

Many Government & Law materials are in the library catalog. Be sure to note the LOCATION indicated in the catalog which identifies which collection in the department or which other library departments and facilities materials are located in. Some older material is in the Southwest Depository and can be requested online. These are usually available within 2 business days. Microform materials are in storage and can be requested online or through the Microform Request form. These are usually available within 1 business day.

INDEXES & DATABASES - GOVERNMENT (MiamiLINK, Research by Subject, Government)

More specialized and in-depth indexing, as well as selected full-text online, is available through the indexes and databases in the Government subject research area. The most popular indexes are LexisNexis Congressional and LexisNexis Legal Research.

INTERNET

Distribution of U.S. government information through the Federal Depository Library Program is now primarily electronic via the U.S. Government Printing Office and government agency web sites. Many formerly print titles are now available online as are titles and databases that were not formerly available in print. Material from official government agency web sites has the same degree of reliability or bias as the often identical material in print.

Many online titles are included in the library catalog. Some excellent web guides to online government information are the University of Michigan Documents Center and Frequently Used Sites Related to U.S. Federal Government Information. See also the U.S. government's own portal FirstGov and the U.S. House and U.S. Senate web sites. Search engines such as Google or Google Uncle Sam can also be used to locate specific government agency web sites or titles.

The U.N., European Union, and Ohio government also rely increasingly on online distribution.
