BACKGROUND & NEWS
FOR GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES/AGENCIES
These provide background and summary information on federal government activities. They can provide
overviews of issues and help identify specific bills or laws that have been in the news.
National Journal (1977-)
CQ Weekly Online (1983-)
CQ Almanac (1948-) GOV REF JK 1 .C66 and KING REF
The first two provide weekly coverage of government activities. National Journal provides coverage and analysis of key political and policy developments. (Earlier issues are in the southwest depository or in microform. Check the library catalog). CQ Weekly covers Congress with in-depth reports on issues, plus a complete wrap up the previous week's news, including the status of bills, behind-the-scenes maneuvering, committee and floor activity, debates and all roll-call votes. (Earlier issues are available in micro and the southwest depository -- search the library catalog for the title Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report). CQ Almanac is an annual compilation on major congressional legislation, issues, and activities for the year. (The King Reference set is more complete than the Gov't & Law Reference set. The earliest years are on microform).
Full-text news articles. To search major newspapers such as the Washington Post and the New York Times, select General News in the news category box and Major Papers in the news source box. Newspapers are not good at giving exact bill or law numbers, so search by keyword/subject terms.
