BUSINESS & INDUSTRY STATISTICS FROM THE U.S. GOVERNMENT:
ECONOMIC CENSUS AND RELATED SOURCES

Every five years (in years ending in 2 and 7) the Census Bureau conducts the Economic Census of business and industry. The Economic Census provides statistics on the number and types of business establishments. NO DATA ON INDIVIDUAL COMPANIES IS REPORTED.

Type of data available include number of establishments and firms, employment, payroll, sales/receipts or value of shipments, operating expenses, and a few other miscellaneous items. (See complete list 2002 or 1997). Statistics are available for the nation, states, metropolitan areas, counties, and places. The geographic coverage and data available vary by economic sector.

STEP 1

Determine the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) number for your business or industry using one of the following:

2002 Economic Census -- Use the NAICS search box at the top on the right. Clicking on the NAICS number in the search results gives a selection of Economic Census data.

2002 NAICS Code and Titles -- Use the 2002 NAICS search box at the top right. Clicking on the NAICS number in the search results gives definitions and shows classification changes over the last few Censuses (important if you plan to compare data in earlier censuses) and links to selected 1997 Economic Census data.

STEP 2

Locate the Economic Census report for your NAICS number.

2002 Economic Census

Look for the Industry series in the "Reports in PDF" box. Match the first two digits of your NAICS code to the NAICS code column, then click on the "More" arrow in the left column to see the list of reports. Look for your full NAICS number in the list. If there is a report available (or tables) there will be a link in the far right columns.

1997 Economic Census

Go to the "Sector-specific reports" box and select by the first two digits of your NAICS number. Report series are listed on the lower part of the page. If your NAICS number begins with 21 (Mining), 23 (Construction) or 31-33 (Manufacturing), the most detailed information will be found in the Industry Series list. Other relevant data may be available in the Subject Series. If your NAICS number begins with any other number, look for a United States or "summary" report in the Geographic Series or a General Summary or Summary report in the Subject Series (titles vary). Other Subject Series listed may also be of interest.

1992 Economic Census

Printed reports for 1992 and earlier Economic Censuses are also available in the Government Information & Law Department.

STEP 3

Consider other Census series that, while not as detailed as the Economic Census, may be more current. The County Business Patterns series covers all economic sectors. Resources for selected economic sectors are also listed on the sector web pages below.
