Climate change, especially the evidence of global warming, has been an issue of concern for many years. A major focus is the likelihood that human activities are contributing to global warming through the production of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), initiated in 1992 at the UN Conference on Environment and Development ("Earth Summit") in Rio de Janeiro, and the associated Kyoto Protocol drafted in 1997, represent an international effort to stabilize greenhouse gases.
