CENSUS FOR GENEALOGISTS: |
Nature and Availability | Background/Additional Information | Miami's Holdings | Indexes | Internet/CD-ROMS | Additional Documents Reference Books Related to Census Research
Census name schedules are the original data sheets collected during each decennial census. Statistical results are published for each census, but the name schedules remain confidential until 72 years after the census year. These original schedules list the individual names and family information of the persons enumerated for the census. These schedules are made available in microfilm format by the National Archives and Records Administration.
Miami does not own an extensive collection of the name schedules. The closest library with a complete microfilm collection of census schedules is the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County (main library). For information on the collection see the History and Genealogy Department Web page.
Miami students/staff may be able to obtain microfilm reels through Interlibrary Loan from the Center for Research Libraries (CRL). CRL holdings are listed in OhioLINK. To search holdings in OhioLINK search the title "Population Schedules of the [no.] Census" or "[No.] Census" (Examples: "Population Schedules of the Tenth Census" or "Tenth Census"). Other OhioLINK libraries besides the Center for Research Libraries own some microfilm, but it is generally not available for loan.
Some public libraries and genealogical societies offer census microfilm rental programs. The National Archives provides a rental program to libraries or individuals.
Since census name schedules are not released to the public until 72 years after the date of the census, the last census released was 1930. Most of the 1890 census was destroyed in a fire.

The microfilm is arranged by census year, state, county, then township. Names are listed in the order the census takers visited each residence. Indexes can help locate specific individuals. The only other alternative is to browse through the microfilm page by page. Many indexes have been published on a state-by-state basis for most census years through 1880. Some individual county indexes have also been published. Miami owns only a small number of these indexes, mostly for Ohio. The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County has a complete collection. For 1880-1920 indexes called Soundex were made available on microfilm. Miami has none of these.

Commercial publishers make census indexes and schedules available online and on CD-ROM, but only for a fee. Many public libraries subscribe to online census databases such as Ancestry Plus or Heritage Quest Online. Individuals may subscribe to these services or purchase CD-ROMs. Some public libraries may subscribe or acquire CD-ROMs. Miami does not acquire any fee-based online services or CD-ROMs in this area. Genealogy groups and volunteers have made some census information available on the Internet for free, but this information is selective.
