In 1980, Marvel Comics tried to stop Spiderwoman from using the name, claiming that it was a trademark infringement. With the help of attorney William Kuntsler, the troupe won, not on the basis of the name being a 5000+year-old icon of Native spirituality, but on the technicality that the troupe first published the name several months before Marvel first used it
